Growing up, I spent most of my time in one of two places — church or the basketball court. There was a time when I loved basketball more than anything. I went to bed thinking about it, and the moment I woke up, I was planning how fast I could get to the court.
I couldn't wait to show up and yell, "I got next!" It didn't matter who I had to play against — where they were from, how tall they were, or who they played for — I showed up to play and to win.
I spent hours studying my favorite players, practicing their moves, and perfecting my own version of what I saw. The more I imitated the greats, the better I became. Without even realizing it, I was learning strategy, rhythm, and timing. Soon, I wasn't just copying anymore — I was creating my own "fantastic shots." That's when my confidence — and my game — went to another level.
Fast-forward to today. In business, speaking, and training, I've done the same thing. I've studied the greats — listened, learned, and taken notes. At first, I repeated their words, quoted their wisdom, and followed their steps. And it felt amazing to share knowledge that inspired others.
But nothing compared to the moment I heard someone quote me for the first time. That's when I realized: by learning from the greats, I had developed my own voice — my own "fantastic shots" in life and business.
So, let me ask you this: What are you studying? Who are you watching? Are you willing to follow the steps of those who've already paved the way — so you can experience your own version of greatness?
Dreaming isn't enough. You've got to guide that dream into reality. And when your moment comes, don't hesitate. Step up confidently and say —
"I Got Next!"
See you at the top.
Until next time,
Don
