FIND THE ONE THING

Real gratitude isn't pretending everything is okay — it's recognizing that something is still okay even when everything isn't.

I'll be honest.

There was a time when gratitude felt like one of those ideas people talked about because it sounded good.

"Just be grateful."

"Focus on your blessings."

"Look on the bright side."

I understood the intention, but on the hard days, those words felt disconnected from reality.

Because I've lived through seasons when life didn't feel bright.

Seasons when the bills felt heavier than the bank account.

When relationships felt strained.

When answers seemed impossible to find.

When I was carrying things that nobody else could see.

On those days, being told to "just be grateful" felt like being handed a flashlight during a hurricane.

Helpful, maybe.

But nowhere near enough.

Over time, though, I've learned something important:

Real gratitude isn't pretending everything is okay.

It's recognizing that something is still okay even when everything isn't.

That's a very different thing.

Real gratitude doesn't deny the struggle.

It sits beside it.

It allows you to say:

"This is hard."

And at the same time:

"There is still something good here."

Those two truths can coexist.

And on the hardest days, they often need to.

I've noticed that my gratitude becomes much smaller when life becomes much harder.

I stop looking for grand reasons to be thankful.

Instead, I look for anchors.

The friend who checked on me.

The unexpected moment of peace.

The lesson hidden inside the setback.

The strength I didn't know I possessed until life required it.

The simple fact that I woke up with another opportunity to try again.

Those things may seem small.

But small things have carried me through some very big storms.

That's what gratitude does.

Not because it changes the circumstance.

Because it changes your footing.

It keeps you grounded when disappointment is trying to pull you under.

It reminds you that even in the middle of uncertainty, not everything is lost.

Not everything is broken.

Not everything is hopeless.

And sometimes that's enough.

Sometimes the goal isn't to feel better.

Sometimes the goal is simply to stay anchored.

To find one thing that's still true.

One thing that's still good.

One thing that's still worth holding onto.

Because when life feels heavy, that one thing can become the difference between drifting and standing.

So if today is difficult...

Don't force gratitude.

Don't fake positivity.

Just find the one thing.

Hold onto it.

That is gratitude too.

Until next time,
Don
